A Mixed Deal

Why is it that Councilman Uvaldo Martinez is trying to get rid of all the card rooms in the Gaslamp? He’s trying to be tough on crime, but card rooms don’t cause crime, people do. The way someone was brought up has more to do with the crime problem than a few harmless card rooms. Martinez should stick to loft housing and art museums downtown if he wants to make a name for himself.

Martinez must think he is some kind of Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry character. I don’t care how tough Martinez is, he won’t get rid of the crime downtown until he gets rid of the sociological causes of crime.

MATT WILSON San Diego In view of the Times article Jan. 11 (“Peep Show Operators Close Door on New Law Aimed at Curbing Viceâ€), I want to express my appreciation and support of Councilman Uvaldo Martinez, whose downtown clean-up efforts are an example of the kind of action needed to revitalize downtown San Diego.

By closing down businesses whose character isn’t consistent with downtown redevelopment, we are creating an environment in which all San Diegans can be proud. Thank you, Councilman Martinez.
