A man who said he favors more humane treatment for laboratory animals called television stations, claiming responsibility for the vandalism of the West Los Angeles home of an official of the City of Hope National Medical Center, police reported. The caller said that he was not a member of the Animal Liberation Front but that he sympathized with the group’s cause. The group claimed responsibility for the theft of more than 100 animals from the City of Hope’s Duarte laboratory last month. The vandal apparently filled Christmas tree balls with red paint, sealed them with wax and threw them against the home and car of Ben Horowitz, executive director of the City of Hope. Police said damage exceeded $1,000.
