MOBILE, Ala. — The $2-billion Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway opened today to commercial traffic, with the first cargo leaving Mobile on the Gulf of Mexico for a much-shortened trip to Sheffield, in the northwest corner of the state on the Tennessee River.
The waterway will cut days off the trip, which used to be done via New Orleans and the Mississippi River.
