The father of a 6-year-old Sacramento boy who died of leukemia said that more than $110,000 donated to cover the cost of the boy’s bone marrow transplant has been distributed to charities. Craig Petrovich died two years after the 1981 transplant. Considered experimental by some doctors, the operation involves treating the diseased bone marrow then replacing it in the body. As the family insurance carriers eventually paid for young Petrovich’s medical care after a legal battle, the family requested and received permission from the donors to turn the money over to organizations that do cancer research and aid families of cancer victims.
