It’s freedom day on Monday for dozens of winter-sport athletes who transferred without moving or were forced to the sideline for CIF eligibility issues in basketball, soccer and wrestling. Their month-long sitout period is over.
Two schools in boys’ basketball will receive big-time help with the eligibility of junior Chris Sandifer at Gardena Serra and senior Eric Cooper Jr. at Long Beach St. Anthony.
Sandifer transferred to Serra from Los Angeles Price in the middle of last season. He has grown a couple of inches and is now 6 feet 4 and can shoot from long range. His arrival is going to set up some epic Del Rey League games between the Cavaliers and No. 2-ranked Bishop Montgomery. Serra also gets junior guard Ron Freeman eligible from Morningside.
Cooper, headed to Arizona, is the son of St. Anthony Coach Eric Cooper. He was a standout at La Verne Lutheran, moved with his father and was forced to sit out December.
One player who won’t become eligible is Long Beach Poly’s Kameron Chatman. He isn’t allowed to play until March 16 after moving from Oregon. The CIF ruled he has to miss one year from the date of his arrival for following his club coach.
