Girls’ basketball: Long Beach Poly beats Country Day

Senior forward Keyla Morgan scored 13 points, including two game-clinching free throws with 18 seconds left, as Long Beach Poly held off La Jolla Country Day, 42-38, to take third place at the Oaks Christian tournament.
Poly led by 10 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Torreys closed to within two points two times in the final minute. Senior guard Carolyn Cosme, sophomore guard Tania Lamb and junior forward Jada Matthews each added five points for the Jackrabbits (11-2), who led 22-21 at halftime.
Senior point guard Kelsey Plum had 20 points for Country Day (6-3), the defending state Division IV champion.
Trailing by nine points at halftime, Canyon Springs rallied to take the lead in the fourth quarter before losing to Chula Vista Mater Dei 66-58 in the seventh-place game.
Sophomore center Charnea Johnson-Chapman led the Cougars (6-7) with 15 points. Renee Borrows scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half and Kimari Hollis scored all 11 of her points in the second half for Canyon Springs.
