Despite playing without its best player, Stanley Johnson, Santa Ana Mater Dei won the SCIBCA tournament championship on Sunday, defeating Calabasas in the final.
Jordan Strawberry played well during the weekend for the Monarchs, who also received strong play from James McGee.
Calabasas was led by junior point guard Jeremy Lieberman and 6-6 junior Max Hoetzl, who didn’t play last season because of a knee injury. Also, Austin Smith started and helped the Coyotes with his rebounding. The Coyotes beat Etiwanda in the semifinals.
Mater Dei is hosting a 39-team tournament this weekend.
