Girls’ basketball: Mater Dei repeats as champion

Trailing for most of the night, Santa Ana Mater Dei outscored Brea Olinda 18-8 in the fourth quarter and got clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to win 54-47 in the Southern Section Division 1AA championship game at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Nirra Fields had 19 points and made two free throws to ice the game with 15.3 seconds left after Brea Olinda was assessed a technical foul for trying to call a timeout when it didn’t have any left. Khalia Lark had 14 points and Jordan Adams added 10 for the second-seeded Monarchs (30-3), who beat Brea Olinda 63-54 in last year’s final.

Keitra Wallace had 16 points for the fifth-seeded Wildcats (24-6), including a layup to pull her team within 50-47 with 19 seconds left. Taylor Spears added 11 points for Brea Olinda, which had upset top-seeded Long Beach Poly 49-43 in the semifinals.
