Thanks to the Southern Section’s getting rid of its rule several years ago that barred coaches from working with players during the off-season, schools are on their own and can do whatever they want, which is why Westlake, Valencia, Simi Valley and Harvard-Westlake are traveling to Las Vegas to play Saturday and Sunday in baseball games.

Harvard-Westlake is facing Bishop Gorman on Saturday morning in a game that should bring out dozens of scouts.

Westlake Coach Zach Miller used to coach at Bishop Gorman and he’s the one who organized the road trip. And he’s just getting started. Next year he might take his players to Hawaii, Texas or Florida for games before the season.

Again, there’s no rule preventing schools from playing games as long as official practice hasn’t begun.

Welcome to the new era in prep baseball.
