Boys’ basketball: Loyola sets up showdown with Alemany

With games against Crespi, Alemany, Chaminade and Orange Lutheran this week, Los Angeles Loyola needed to start the week on a positive note, and the Cubs came through on Monday night with a 70-52 Mission League victory over Crespi.

Jacob Hazzard and Justin Childress each scored 17 points. The Cubs (16-2, 5-2) are tied with Crespi (18-3, 5-2) for second place, one game behind Alemany (17-3, 6-1), which took over sole possession of first place with an 88-60 victory over West Hills Chaminade. Bear Henderson scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds and Max Guercy added 16 points. Jaron Martin scored 32 points for Chaminade.

Alemany plays at Loyola on Wednesday night.

Loyola took control of the game in the third quarter. After Christian Johnson made a three-pointer to start the quarter, cutting Crespi’s deficit to one point, Loyola went on a 10-0 run, with Hazzard and Childress each scoring five points.

Crespi badly missed Michael Milligan Jr., who had to sit out the game because of a concussion suffered against Harvard-Westlake. Loyola has won five consecutive league games since losses to Crespi and Alemany.

Harvard-Westlake defeated St. Francis, 71-45. Derick Newton scored 20 points.

In the Pacific League, Christian Misi had 15 points and 16 rebounds in Crescenta Valley’s 62-45 win over Glendale.

In the East Valley League, Grant defeated Arleta, 61-26. Gor Plavchyan scored 19 points and had 15 rebounds. In the Western League, Palisades defeated University, 65-51. Donovan Johnson scored 24 points and Brenden Otero 21.

In the Alpha League, Sierra Canyon defeated Brentwood, 59-58. Jahmel Taylor scored 24 points.
