On Christmas Day, alumni from Encino Crespi ran a full-page color advertisement in the Daily News titled ‘Crespi Carmelite High School Football. Cradle of Champions.’

There were photos of past Crespi football coaches Harry Welch, Jim Benkert, Bill Redell, Troy Thomas and Tim Lins, along with current coach Jon Mack. Also included was the school’s address and phone number.

The cost for a full-page Sunday ad in the Daily News is $6,100, so Crespi is doing a great service to keep the newspaper business going. I hope that Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod doesn’t object, because we need more private schools to advertise, particularly in the Los Angeles Times, where a full-page Sunday ad costs $36,000.

So if Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, JSerra, Alemany and any other school wants to promote its football, basketball or even baseball programs, newspapers will welcome you with open arms. And hopefully, the Southern Section will say it’s completely legal.
