Track and field: Long Beach Poly’s Melia Cox advances in girls’ 100 hurdles and triple jump

Long Beach Poly’s Melia Cox, who earlier this year ran the 100-meter hurdles in a nation-leading 13.34 seconds, won her preliminary heat in the event Friday at the state track meet at Clovis Buchanan High, finishing in 13.42.
Also advancing to Saturday’s championship race from Southern California were Ayala’s Brea Buchanan (13.78) and Rancho Cucamonga’s Jordie Munford (13.92).
Cox also advanced to Saturday’s championship in the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 40 feet 11.25 inches that was the third best of the day. Union City Logan’s Ciarra Brewer had the longest leap of 43-02.50.
Also advancing to Saturday’s championship in the triple jump from Southern California were San Luis Obispo’s Abrianna Torres (39-06.50), Valencia’s Faith Anumba (39-00.75) and Long Beach Poly’s Adrianna May (38-09.25).
