Boys’ basketball: Carpinteria coach dies of cancer

John Ward, the boys’ basketball coach and athletic director at Carpinteria, died Wednesday after a battle with colon cancer. He was 55.
Ward coached basketball for 23 years at Santa Barbara Bishop Diego and also was the athletic director. He left for Carpinteria in 2005 to coach basketball and later became athletic director. He also taught math.
