The California Preps Sportswriters Assn. has awarded The Times’ Eric Sondheimer best column of the year for a story on Los Angeles Cathedral receiver Kyle Merrill.

Merrill’s brother, Matthew, was killed in a car accident involving an alleged drunk driver on Kyle Merrill’s birthday in December 2006. Kyle Merrill was also riding in the car at the time.

Football helped Merrill get past an ordeal that originally made him question his faith. The column can be read here.
