The City Section Division I baseball playoffs begin Wednesday with a terrific pitching matchup: San Fernando junior David Lira (6-1) taking on San Pedro senior Jonathon Mata (9-1) at San Pedro.

San Pedro (21-5) is seeded No. 5 and deserves the favorite’s role, but No. 12 San Fernando (16-10) certainly plays well when Lira is on the mound.

There aren’t usually too many upsets in the first round, but when there’s good pitching, anything can happen.
