BAKERSFIELD _ Gavin Presley’s three-pointer at the buzzer has pulled Newark Memorial to within 13-11 of Westchester after the first quarter of the Division I championship game.

Westchester’s guards came through in the early going. Kareem Jamar had an outside jumper, plus a three-point play. Denzel Douglas made a three-pointer to put the Comets on top, 11-3, with 3:46 left.

One problem for the Comets has resurfaced. They sometimes don’t box out, and Newark is picking up fouls and offensive rebounds. Dwayne Polee Jr., the City Section player of the year, is stuck on the bench after picking up two fouls.
