Hold off on the coronation of West Valley League powers Chatsworth, Reseda Cleveland and Woodland Hills El Camino Real as the top City Section Division I title contenders.
The San Pedro Pirates from the Marine League are finally at full strength and starting to make an impact. They are 18-8 overall and 9-1 in league.
Junior pitcher Jose Delgado, ineligible earlier in the season, is back and throwing hard. Center fielder Ronnie Galosic is headed for All-City honors with 33 hits. All-City player Jimmy Cortez has nine home runs. Another junior pitcher, John Mata, has a 1.79 earned-run average.
The regular season ends next week, then comes the seeding meeting May 16. San Pedro figures to be in the running for the No. 2 or No. 3 seed. And remember, San Pedro is the only non-San Fernando Valley team to win a City upper-division baseball title since Venice in 1972.
