Dominguez made five of six free throws in the final 1 minute 2 seconds to hold off Mater Dei for a 63-60 victory in an exciting Southern Section Division I-AA championship game at the Honda Center.
The second-seeded Monarchs twice cut the deficit to four points in the final minutes, but couldn’t get any closer until Blake Arnet hit a three-point basket at the buzzer.
Great game plan by Dominguez, using their athleticism to out-run the Monarchs and even hold their own on the glass, despite giving up a significant height advantage.
Don’t feel too bad for the Monarchs, however. They lost this game to Artesia last year and still came back to win the Division II state title.
