After Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked-off Apple’s Let’s talk iPhone media event at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters on Tuesday, the stage was handed over to Scott Forstall.

Forstall, Apple’s senior vice president of iOS software, announced that iOS 5, which will run on the iPhone 5, iPads and the iPhone 4 too will be released Oct. 12.

The iOS guru also said that Apple’s App Store has been filled with more than 500,000 apps, 140,000 of which have been built specifically for the iPad.

And the number of apps available doesn’t seem to be lost on consumers either. Forstall said that customers are downloading apps at a clip of more than 1 billion every month.

Forstall also reviewed the features of iOS 5, which included no new information on Tuesday, but summarized what we covered at Apple’s iOS 5 event in June.

One new app, however, that Forstall mentioned was Cards, which lets you create paper printed cards from an iPhone or iPad.

The cards sent from the Cards app are marked with a postal service barcode so the sender would get a text message when the card arrives.
