Tim Tebow can head into the off-season knowing his job as the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback is secure. Chief of football operations John Elway declared the popular, yet inconsistent player the team’s 2012 starter during a season-ending news conference on Monday.
“Tim has earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp next year,” Elway said. “He made some good strides.”
POLL: Should Tim Tebow be the Broncos’ starting QB in 2012?
Tebow compiled an 8-5 record as a starter this season, leading the team to its first postseason appearance and playoff victory since the 2005-06 season.
But he averaged the fewest passing yards per game (124) of any starting quarterback during the regular season and had to rely on his legs and seemingly miraculous comebacks to pull out victories week after week. He struggled during a three-game losing streak to end the regular season before a career game in a 29-23 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round.
Elway, a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Broncos, has pledged to work with Tebow on his passing game during the off-season.
The announcement comes two days after the Broncos’ season ended with a 45-10 loss to the New England Patriots in the divisional round of the playoffs.
