Rain could complicate Angels’ plans

The Angels are scheduled to open the regular season Thursday afternoon in Kansas City but it looks like the weatherman has other plans -- and that could be a problem.
Forecasts call for a 50% chance of rain and wild-chill temperatures in the 40s Thursday. If the game is rained out, it probably will be made up Monday, an off day for both teams. But that would be something of a worst-case scenario for Angels Manager Mike Scioscia. With Joel Pineiro on the disabled list and two off days scheduled in the season’s first eight days, the Angels planned to go with a four-man starting rotation. Losing Monday’s off day to a makeup game would scuttle those plans.
Right-hander Jered Weaver, the major league strikeout leader last season, is scheduled to start for the Angels, who are 6-1 in their last seven season-opening games. The Royals, who had baseball’s best spring winning percentage at 20-10, will go with right-hander Luke Hochevar.
