UCLA’s passing game showed a pulse against Arizona State, and backup quarterback Richard Brehaut passed for three touchdowns and ran for another.

But he wasn’t even the best backup quarterback on the field at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

Sophomore Brock Osweiler, a 6-foot-8 former basketball star, passed for nearly as many yards against the Bruins than he had in his college career before Friday.

Osweiler, playing in place of starter Steven Threet, completed 27 of 36 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns as Arizona State rallied from an early 17-0 deficit end UCLA’s hopes of qualifying for a bowl game.

Arizona State kept its own bowl hopes alive, improving to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in Pacific 10 Conference action with its rivalry game against Arizona still to play.

UCLA fell to 4-7, 2-6.

Brehaut completed 33 of 56 passes for 324 yards, including scoring passes of 46 yards to Randall Carroll, 21 yards to Nelson Rosario and four yards to Joseph Fauria. He had one pass intercepted, but that was after he hit Taylor Embree in the chest with a pass, only to have it dropped, deflected into the air, and picked off.

Brehaut also ran 12 yards for a touchdown.

UCLA rolled up a season-high 442 yards in offense ... and gave up 595.

Osweiler had passed for 399 yards in two seasons as a backup before Friday, but he picked apart the Bruins’ secondary and Arizona State also ran for 211 yards. Cameron Marshall led way, carrying 17 times for 147 yards. His 71-yard scoring run gave the Sun Devils a 31-20 lead in the third quarter.

UCLA cut Arizona State’s lead to 31-27 on the Brehaut to Rosario scoring pass, but Jamal Miles took the kickoff back 99 yards for a Sun Devils’ touchdown.

Johnathan Franklin ran for 73 yards in 14 carries and Brehaut connected with 11 different receivers. Embree and Rosario each made nine receptions -- Embree for 105 yards and Rosario for 65.

Arizona State’s Max Tabach intercepted a Richard Brehaut pass and Arizona State buried the Bruins. Quarterback Brock Osweiler threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Pflgrad, his fourth touchdown pass of the game.

Arizona State 38, UCLA 27, 1:11 left in third quarter

UCLA’s turn.

Arizona State’s Jamal Miles returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to put the Sun Devils back up by 11 with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

Arizona State 31, UCLA 27, third quarter

UCLA quarterback Richard Brehaut completed seven of eight passes, keeping the Bruins in the game. He threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Rosario while being hit. Rosario has eight catches for a career single-game high.

A game that has becomes chippy tilted further Arizona State’s way. After four personal foul penalties in four minutes_three on Arizona State, plus a goal-line stand, the Sun Devils go 99 yards to take an 11-point lead.

UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin was stacked up short of the goal line on fourth down. Three plays later, Arizona State running back Cameron Marshall broke into the secondary, deked safety Rahim Moore and was off on a 71-yard touchdown run.

Arizona State 24, UCLA 20, third quarter

Arizona State’s first drive of the second half could have been a lot worse for UCLA. Brock Osweiler hooked up with T.J. Simpson on a 78-yard pass play. UCLA’s Sheldon Price chased Simpson down at the 12-yard line, preventing a touchdown Arizona State settled for a 21-yard goal by Thomas Weber.

Arizona State 21, UCLA 20, halftime

UCLA couldn’t stand prosperity, blowing a 17-0 first quarter lead against Arizona State Friday. The Sun Devils got three touchdown passes from backup quarterback Brock Osweiler for a 21-20 halftime lead.

UCLA had 149 total yards after its first four possessions. Running back Johnathan Franklin had 55 on the fourth play from scrimmage, setting up a 12-yard touchdown run by Richard Brehaut for a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game. Brehaut and Randall Carroll accounted for 40 and a touchdown pass that followed the defense holding Arizona State on a fourth down play.

Even the special teams got involved, with Dalton Hilliard blocking a punt to set up a 41-yard field goal by Kai Forbath.

After 13 minutes, UCLA was breezing with what was its best quarter of football. The Bruins then revert to form.

Osweiller, who replaced Steve Threet, picked apart the Bruins. He threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns in the half.

UCLA’s offense, meanwhile, went dormant. The Bruins managed to get pick up a field goal at the end of the half after getting two chances. Forbath’s 53-yard attempt sailed just wide, but Arizona State’s James Brooks was called for leaping on the back of a teammate in an attempt to block the kick, a 15-yard penalty. Forbath made the 37-yard attempt with no time left. It gave him 85 career field goals, tying John Lee’s school record.

Franklin had 59 yards rushing in the first half, giving him 1,004 for the season. He is UCLA’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Chris Markey in 2006.

Arizona State 21, UCLA 17, 1:11 left in first half

UCLA has frittered away a 17-0 lead. Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler took the Sun Devils on a methodical 63-yard drive, with little or no resistance from UCLA’s defense.

Osweiler was eight for eight passing on the drive, the last completion being a seven-yard touchdown pass to Gerell Robinson with 1:11 left in the half.

UCLA 17, Arizona State 14, 13:38 left in second quarter

Arizona State creeps closer. UCLA has three penalties on a possession inside its own 15. Arizona State gets the ball at mid-field. Quarterback Brock Osweiler completes two of three passes, the last to Mike Willie, who slips from the grasp and Rahim Moore and Tony Dye, for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 13:38 left in the half.

Arizona State answers. A 70-yard completion from Brock Osweiler to Deantre Lewis gives the Sun Devils a first down on the UCLA eight-yard touchdown. Three plays later, Osweiler threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Pflugrad.

UCLA 17, Arizona State 0, 2:33 left in first quarter

After Arizona State goes for it, and fails, on a fourth-down play, UCLA strikes quickly. Quarterback Richard Brehaut found Randall Carroll all alone down the middle for a 40-yard touchdown pass with 2:33 left in the first quarter

First quarter, UCLA 10, Arizona State 0

UCLA’s Dalton Hilliard blocked a punt, setting the Bruins up on the Arizona State 28-yard line. The Bruins gets the minimum out of it, as a false start penalty on Mike Harris sets them back. Kai Forbath kicked a 41-yard field goal.

On the brief possession, UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin went four yards off tackle, putting him over 1,000 for the season. He is UCLA’s first 1,000-yard back since Chris Markey in 2006.

First quarter, UCLA 7, Arizona State 0

UCLA scores quick. Johnathan Franklin’s 55-yard run on fourth play sets up a 12-yard touchdown run by quarterback Richard Brehaut. Brehaut had a key third-down completion on the dirve, hitting Ricky Marvray for a six-yard game, just enough for a first down. Franklin broke free on the next play.
