The Ducks have traded goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to the Toronto Maple Leafs, a source with knowledge of the situation said this morning.
[Updated at 8:55 a.m.: The team traded him pending his agreement to waive his no-trade clause, which he is expected to do soon.]
Giguere will rejoin his friend and longtime goalie coach, Francois Allaire, and his former general manager with the Ducks, Brian Burke. It is believed that the Ducks will get goalie Vesa Toskala in return and might get another player as well.
The Ducks’ agreement with Jonas Hiller on a four-year, $18-million extension on Saturday cleared the way to trade Giguere, who was the most valuable player of the 2003 Stanley Cup playoffs and was the backbone of their 2007 Cup championship but has struggled the last season and a half.
Giguere’s contract, which calls for him to be paid $6 million this season and $7 million next season, contains a no-trade clause, which he waived in order to go to Toronto.
More details as we get them.
