Former UCLA and University of Alabama at Birmingham basketball coach Gene Bartow has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, according to an Associated Press report.

Bartow, 78, is scheduled to begin outpatient treatment next week at the Kirklin Clinic in Birmingham, according to a UAB spokesman.

Bartow followed John Wooden as coach at UCLA in 1975, guiding the program for two seasons and taking the Bruins to one Final Four. He then coached at UAB for 13 seasons, making another Final Four in 1982.
