Known Universe: This six-part series illuminates the latest research into some of the most astonishing aspects of our universe. The premiere ‘Cosmic Collisions,’ explores what is being done to prevent a potentially devastating asteroid impact on our planet (7 and 10 p.m. National Geographic).

The Mentalist: Jane and Lisbon (Simon Baker, Robin Tunney) and the rest of the team prepare to meet their new boss (Aunjanue Ellis) in this new episode (9 p.m. CBS).

Supernatural: Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles) are ambushed, shot and killed and sent to heaven, but their troubles don’t end there, in this new episode (9 p.m. KTLA).

Fringe: This quirky series returns with Walter (John Noble) flashing back to 1985 while explaining Peter’s (Joshua Jackson) origins to Olivia (Anna Torv). Orla Brady guest stars as Peter’s mother. (9 p.m. Fox).

Fugitive Chronicles: This new docudrama series, re-creates some of the most exciting fugitive captures in recent history, beginning with the saga of Ralph ‘Bucky’ Phillips, who set off the most expensive manhunt in New York state history, during which three state troopers were shot (10 p.m. A&E).

Ace of Cakes: Duff and his team have to do a cake modeled after the New York Stock Exchange, then they get to ring the opening bell (10:30 p.m. Food).

Beasts of the Bible: This new special explores the most-extraordinary creatures found in biblical stories (8 p.m. Animal Planet).

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington: James Stewart seemed born to play the title character of director Frank Capra’s 1939 social comedy about an idealistic young U.S. senator who stands alone against corrupt politicians with a filibuster. Jean Arthur and Claude Raines also star (7 p.m. TCM).

College basketball: NIT Tournament (4 p.m. ESPN).

Soccer: Club Deportivo Chivas USA visit the Galaxy (8 p.m. ESPN2).
