The state Senate Appropriations Committee will hear a bill Monday morning that would ban free plastic or paper bags in grocery and liquor stores.

The bill, AB 1998 by Assemblywoman Julia Brownley (D-Santa Monica), is scheduled for a vote later in the day.

If the bill becomes law, stores would only be able to offer reusable bags to their customers, beginning in July 2013.
