Woman dies trying to rescue horse in Riverside County

A woman trying to rescue her horse was struck and killed by a vehicle in Riverside County, officials said Thursday night.
The horse trotted onto Grand Avenue near Ontario Way shortly before sunrise Thursday in Lakeland Village, an unincorporated area near Elsinore, officials said.
The woman, who owned the miniature horse, tried to retrieve the animal but was hit by the vehicle, the Riverside County Department of Animal Services said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said. Her name and age were not released.
A Good Samaritan on horseback helped Animal Services Sgt. Lesley Huennekens corral the loose horse.
“He was running all over and never did calm down,” Huennekens said in a statement.
Huennekens transported the horse to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley, where the animal was given hay and water.
