Teenage girl killed, man injured in 605 Freeway crash

A teenage girl was killed and a man seriously injured early Sunday morning when their car careened off the 605 Freeway, police said.

Shortly after midnight, the 16-year-old girl was riding in the passenger seat of an older model Honda Del Sol driven by a 20-year-old man, according to a statement released by the California Highway Patrol. Neither person was identified.

The man was driving north at a high speed on the 605 Freeway near the interchange with the 10 Freeway when he lost control of the vehicle, veered across several lanes, and crashed down an embankment, according to the CHP account.

The car struck a tree, rolled over and continued through a metal fence, the CHP statement said. The girl, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the statement said. The man was ejected from the car by the force of the crash and suffered major injuries, authorities said. He was taken to County USC Medical Center. His condition was not known.
