Weekend estate sale of Danish Modern plus midcentury ceramics by artist Sue Christy

Normally the words ‘estate sale’ and ‘West Covina’ are not enough to get me out of bed at 7 a.m. on a weekend. (Nothing against West Covina; it’s just a long haul from Echo Park.) This Saturday and Sunday, however, I might set my alarm clock. (Thanks to the Elegant Thrifter, Stan Williams, for the heads-up.)

On the block are the entire household contents of artist Sue Christy, a student of Grant Wood, who painted the iconic ‘American Gothic.’ Not exactly Google famous, Christy has a brief biography on Allas Estate Sales: She painted in the late 1930s and 1940s. That’s pretty much it, except to say that her oils and sketches are pretty good.

At some point, Christy apparently moved to West Covina, filled her midcentury home with Danish Modern furnishings and took up ceramics, turning out pieces, like the one at right, that I find very alluring.

Contacted while still setting up the sale, the organizers couldn’t discuss specific designs or prices (which get reduced on Sunday), but the items on the website’s photo gallery suggest that Christy had enviably good taste. She owned designs by Pierre Paulin, installed groovy 1960s light fixtures and collected Murano glass and metal wall sculptures that may possibly be by Curtis Jere.

The sale will be at 1319 Golden Vista Drive, West Covina, Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
