Gustavo Dudamel will pull double duty as conductor and host when the Los Angeles Philharmonic kicks off its new season of live cinema broadcasts on Sunday.
The first concert of the new series, which takes place Sunday at 2 p.m. PT and 5 p.m. ET, will be an all-Mendelssohn affair with performances of the composer’s ‘Hebrides’ Overture, Symphony No. 3 and Violin Concerto featuring soloist Janine Jansen.
Dudamel will conduct the concert from Walt Disney Concert Hall and will also serve as on-screen host to viewers in movie theaters around the country. The orchestra said that the broadcast will include behind-the-scenes interviews and rehearsal footage of the musicians.
Last season, the first L.A. Phil Live broadcast was hosted by Vanessa Williams, and actors Kate Burton and John Lithgow hosted later concerts.
The orchestra said its broadcast will reach more than 440 cinemas as part of NCM Fathom. In the L.A. area, it will be broadcast at cinemas including the AMC Burbank 16, AMC Century City, L.A. Live in downtown and AMC Citywalk in Universal City.
On Feb. 18, Dudamel is scheduled to lead the orchestra in a live cinema broadcast from Caracas, Venezuela, of Mahler’s ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ (No. 8), featuring more than 1,000 musicians.
