Four plays, including two world premieres, will help to anchor the La Jolla Playhouse’s 2011-12 season, the company announced this week. In all, the new subscription season will feature six productions, including two musicals that will be announced at a later date.

The new season is set to begin in the fall of 2011. The company has yet to announce opening dates for the productions. ‘Milk Like Sugar,’ by Kirsten Greenidge and directed by Rebecca Taichman, is a Playhouse co-commission with Theater Masters in Colorado, and will be a world-premiere production. The play focuses on a 16-year-old girl in a small town who decides to enter into a pregnancy pact with two friends from high school.

‘A Dram of Drumchhicit,’ by Arthur Kopit and Anton Dudley, will be the second world-premiere play of the season. The dark comedy tells the story of an American entrepreneur who decides to build a golf course on a Scottish island only to come across dead bodies and supernatural forces. The play will be directed by Christopher Ashley, the company’s artistic director.

This marks the Playhouse debut for Kopit, who wrote the book to the musical ‘Nine.’

A new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s epic classic ‘Peer Gynt’ will be staged in a co-production with Kansas City Repertory Theatre.

Five performers will play 40 characters in this retelling of the Scandinavian saga. David Schweizer adapted the text and will direct the production. Culture Clash, the Chicano performance group, will return to the Playhouse for the first time since 2006 for a production of the group’s new work, ‘American Night: The Ballad of Juan José,’ written by Richard Montoya and directed by Jo Bonney. The play follows the title character as he prepares for his U.S. citizenship exam and encounters a host of colorful characters.
