Jude Law, Laura Linney heading for Broadway*

The upcoming 2009-10 Broadway season looks like it will offer plenty of opportunities for celebrity gawking. As Culture Monster reported earlier, Julia Stiles and Bill Pullman are slated for David Mamet’s ‘Oleanna’ in the fall. (The production is playing at the Mark Taper Forum through July 12.)

Now comes word that Jude Law will transfer from London in Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet,’ while Laura Linney will take one of the lead roles in Donald Margulies’ ‘Time Stands Still.’

The Donmar Warehouse’s production of ‘Hamlet’ starring Law will kick off at the Broadhurst Theatre on Sept. 12 for a 12-week engagement. (The official opening day is set for Oct. 6.) The production, directed by Michael Grandage, is playing at the Wyndham Theatre in London through Aug. 22. ‘Hamlet’ will mark Law’s first return to Broadway since 1995 when he starred in ‘Indiscretions’ alongside Kathleen Turner. London critics generally have praised Law’s performance as the melancholy prince of Denmark, though not everyone was pleased by the production’s stark, minimalist conception.

‘Time Stands Still,’ starring Linney, will begin performances at the Manhattan Theatre Club on Jan. 5, 2010, with an official opening date of Jan. 28. The drama, which follows the troubled relationship between a journalist and a photographer, had its world premiere at the Geffen Playhouse in L.A. in February in a production that starred Anna Gunn, David Harbour and Alicia Silverstone.

Linney most recently appeared on Broadway in the 2008 revival of Christopher Hampton’s ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses.’ The actress has worked with Margulies before, most notably in the play ‘Sight Unseen,’ which she performed in 1992 and 2004, taking different roles each time.

Additional casting for both ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Time Stands Still’ will be announced at future dates, according to the shows’ respective producers.
