Chanel’s spring 2012 ocean of delights

Unfortunately, I’m sitting out Paris Fashion Week this season. One of the shows I am saddest to have missed is Chanel. From the photos, it looks like Karl Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into an underwater palace with oversized white shells and coral creating an otherworldly stage.
Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine was the musical guest (served up on a half-shell of course). And she looked like a goddess in a gown that appeared to have feather-like tenticles. (Bravo to Karl Lagerfeld for not falling back on tired mermaid references.)
The angular accents on the suits looked fresh, offsetting the light, spongy tweeds in nearly irridescent colors. I also like the silver gladiator sandals, the chain-handle bag-as-wrapped-present and the pearls in the hair.
Lagerfeld seemed to play a little with transparency on a couple of looks. And for evening, the sea of short dresses trimmed with petals and trailing streamers made the models look like wondrous creatures from the deep.
