After weeks of safe style at the Golden Globe and SAG Awards, red carpet fashion is finally heating up at the Grammys with edgy gowns and edgy designers.

Beyonce is playing up her bodacious bod in a peachy nude, satin, short-sleeve gown with curve-tracing piping. It was designed by Stephane Rolland, a Paris-based couturier who launched his line in 2007. When he showed his most recent couture collection just days ago, the Associated Press described a few of the gowns as sprouting what looked like “dinosaur vertebrae.â€

No, Carrie Underwood is not wrapped in a sheet of paper. It’s actually a white asymmetrical Edition by George Chakra gown with silver leather straps across the bust and shoulders.

Ciara is having a bit of a bondage moment, too, in a long-sleeved black Givenchy dress that has everything but the kitchen sink on it — black dots, clear crystals and silk cord. Oh yeah, it’s also got vertebrae-like details.

Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland is wearing a modern-looking cerise crepe Victoria Beckham gown with black bands accenting the waist. Jennifer Hudson is in Victoria Beckham, too -- a black mini dress. (Beckham has been designing dresses for five seasons now and showing them in low-key presentations in New York.)

Meanwhile, Katy Perry said her nude-colored Zac Posen gown with gold metal flower-shaped embroidery reminds her of India, where she recently vacationed with fiancée Russell Brand. The theme carries over to her elephant-shaped, crystal covered minaudiere, which is by Judith Leiber.

And check out Lady Gaga’s crystal-covered platform shoes and stockings! Alexander McQueen’s armadillo shoes have nothing on those.
