ESPN reported this week that former USC Coach Lane Kiffin was invited by Nick Saban to help evaluate Alabama’s offense.

Insert joke here ( ).

USC fans would tell Alabama fans to expect a lot of “bubble screens†in the Tide’s Jan. 2 Sugar Bowl game against Oklahoma.

The idea of Kiffin being a consultant to a coach who has won four national titles is pretty intriguing. Kiffin was fired by USC on Sept. 29 and eventually replaced by Steve Sarkisian.

We’re not sure what’s behind this. Maybe Saban is trying to irritate Tennessee fans, who make it their daily ritual to rip Kiffin for leaving Knoxville for USC after the 2009 season.

Kiffin went 7-6 in his lone year with the Vols, but mind you, his team nearly defeated Alabama that year. The Crimson Tide needed two blocked kicks by Terrence Cody to preserve a 12-10 win in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama went on to win its first BCS national title.

Maybe Saban is worried Doug Nussmeier, his offensive coordinator, may leave to take a head coaching job?

Maybe he wants to hire Kiffin to run his offense? And maybe the whole world has gone crazy?

What Saban really needs is a consultant for his kick return coverage on missed 57-yard field goals against Auburn.

Or maybe this is just Saban picking the brain of someone who has been, like him or not, a head coach at two major universities and one NFL team.

You think Saban picked Kiffin up at the airport?
