Bobby Valentine crashes bike, suffers minor injuries
It just has not been a great year for Bobby Valentine. Not only is he heavily rumored to be on his way out as Boston Red Sox manager after one of the most disappointing seasons in the team’s history, he can’t seem to ride his bike safely.
On Tuesday, Valentine was riding his bike in Central Park in New York, where the Red Sox were playing the Yankees, when he got a text message from Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
Figuring he could ride and read at the same time, Valentine started reading the message while continuing to pedal. He looked up in time to see himself heading right toward people walking in front of him. He swerved and careened down a hillside, falling over his bike’s handlebars.
“I shouldn’t have been reading a text while I was riding, “ he told the New York Times. “That’s the wrong thing to do. But at least I was wearing my helmet.â€
Valentine has bruises on his knees and hips, but is lucky to have not suffered a more serious injury.
Of course, with the way the season went for the Red Sox, you have to wonder: Was Pedroia secretly watching Valentine from afar, waiting for just the right moment to send a text and cause an accident?
OK, probably not. Either way, it is the perfect capper to Valentine’s season, possibly his only season, as Red Sox manager.
