What do Oakland pitcher Bartolo Colon and San Francisco outfielder Melky Cabrera have in common besides a 50-game suspension for testing positive for testosterone? Well, according to Chicago White Sox slugger Adam Dunn, neither are the sharpest knife in the drawer.

“It’s kind of how dumb do you have to be?†Dunn told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. “You guys see how many times the drug test guys are here. I feel like they’re here at least once a homestand.

“I don’t want to call you stupid, but you kind of look yourself in the mirror and it’s pretty dumb.â€

Colon turned his career around this season and was 10-9 with a 3.43 earned-run average for the Athletics this season.

He had won the Cy Young Award with the Angels in 2005 before struggling over the next several seasons due to of injuries and poor conditioning.

Colon released a statement on Wednesday apologizing.

“I apologize to the fans, to my teammates and to the Oakland A’s,†he said. “I accept responsibility for my actions and I will serve my suspension as required by the joint drug program.â€

He will miss the final 40 games of the regular season and the first 10 games of the postseason if Oakland advances that far. Any remainder of the suspension would be served in a future season, if Colon signs another major-league contract.

Oakland starter Brandon McCarthy also had some unkind words for his teammate.

“You can say someone’s a good teammate, but it has to extend in all facets,†McCarthy said. “Off the field, on the field and how you are in the clubhouse, no matter how you look at it, we’ve now lost a really important part of our team to his actions.â€
