L.A. move could be a career boost for Steve Nash, filmmaker
Steve Nash appears ready for showtime, and we’re not just talking about whether he can dazzle Laker fans on the court with his no-look passes, crossovers and pick-and-roll sequences.
We’re talking about how he’ll also perform under the Hollywood lights beyond Staples Center. The early reviews suggest he’ll fit in just fine. Nash has recently starred in a series of parodies of various superheroes that he wrote and directed himself through NOC, which produces short videos on the personalities and lives of professional athletes.
The most recent one included a riff on “The Dark Knight Rises,†in which Nash dresses up as an overweight Batman and begins a daily workout called Bat/Sanity. After slimming down from 240 pounds through various exercises (jumping around on his couch, for one), Batman then challenges boxer Manny Pacquiao to a fight. Nash completes this whole routine while perfectly imitating Christian Bale’s husky voice.
This isn’t just a one-hit wonder. In a “Star Wars†parody, Nash proclaims he is the father of former Suns teammate Jared Dudley.
Nash has also made parodies of “Spider-Man†and “Paranormal Activity 4.†In another video, Nash filmed himself before going to bed, realizing he argues with referees in his sleep.
Perhaps Nash, 38, who has a three-year, $27-million deal with the Lakers, will become a full-time filmmaker after he retires from basketball. He assisted on an ESPN “30 for 30†documentary and reportedly has helped produce a documentary on soccer legend Pele that will be released to coincide with the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Moving forward, perhaps he could team up with Metta World Peace, who’s always willing to do something goofy. Or maybe Nash will team up with Blake Griffin, who interned during the NBA lockout with FunnyorDie.com. Who knows if Jack Nicholson will find Nash’s acting as enthralling as his on-court skills. But it’s safe to presume these ventures will expand in Hollywood.
