Dodgers’ J.P. Howell could earn $4.6 million this year

Left-hander J.P. Howell’s one-year deal with the Dodgers could be worth as much as $4.6 million, according to a person familiar with the details of the reliever’s contract.

Howell will earn a base salary of $2.85 million and can earn an additional $1.75 million in incentives.

But for Howell to collect the full amount, he would have to become the team’s closer – something unlikely to happen, considering the bullpen also includes Brandon League, Kenley Jansen and Ronald Belisario.

Howell can make $750,000 in bonuses based on relief appearances -- $75,000 for 50 games, $125,000 for 55 games, $150,000 for 60 games, $200,000 for 65 games, and $200,000 for 70 games.

Howell made 55 relief appearances last season for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Howell can earn an additional $300,000 based on the numbers of innings he pitches -- $50,000 each for 50 innings, 55 innings, 65 innings and 70 innings; and $100,000 for 75 innings.

Howell pitched 50 1/3 innings last season.

The 29-year-old can also collect $700,000 based on games finished: 100,000 each for 30, 35 and 40 games; and $200,000 each for 45 and 50 games.

If Howell duplicates his statistics from last season, he would earn $250,000 in incentives.
