Throwback Thursday: Michael Jackson look-alikes rock their best ‘80s looks

On June 19, 1984, 17-year-old Eric Evans donned a pair of “cooler-than-cool aviator sunglasses†and a sequined glove and strutted his stuff on stage.

Evans had been studying Michael Jackson since he was 2 years old, and on that day he was vying to be represented by Ron Smith’s Celebrity Look-Alikes. He was one of seven people the agency chose during the West Hollywood audition. He joined two dozen other Jackson look-alikes selected from more than 300 applicants in a seven-city search.

In a story that ran in the June 20, 1984, edition of The Times, Evans’ mother, Rita, called Jackson her son’s “first love.â€

“He was so much in love with him, he grew up to look like him,†she said. “Everyone has an idol to follow, and Michael is his.â€
