Chester Police Department officials secured the campus following the incident, Dan Hanson, the director of public relations at the university, told the Los Angeles Times in an email.

“All indications are that this was not a random act of violence,†he said.

The student was shot near the school’s athletic center Monday evening and police were dispatched shortly after, at about 8:54 p.m.

“The Widener student was sitting inside a vehicle after playing a game of basketball when he was approached,†police officials said.

At the request of the student’s family, the university is not releasing the victim’s name, Hanson said. The student is in stable but critical condition at Crozer Chester Medical Center.

The university reported on its website and Twitter page that classes were canceled on Tuesday at the main campus and Exton campuses because of snow.
