Missing 6-day-old baby in Wisconsin found in bag outside gas station
A 6-day-old baby taken from his Wisconsin home before sunrise Thursday was found alive, swaddled in blankets, at an Iowa gas station at 10:15 a.m. local time Friday, authorities announced.
The Beloit Police Department worked around the clock with state, county and federal law enforcement -- totaling about 100 officers -- to track down Kayden Powell. Beloit Police Chief Steven Kopp said at a press conference that Kayden was in excellent condition despite cold temperatures. Kayden and his parents were expected to be reunited at a hospital later Friday.
West Branch, Iowa, Police Chief Mike Horihan heard the baby’s cries during a canvass of the area near the gas station, the FBI said. The baby was found in a tote bag left outside, nearly 200 miles away from where he was taken.
A woman described as the baby’s aunt was taken into custody Thursday near the same gas station as a person of interest in relation to the kidnapping. The woman was seen near the Powell residence at the time Kayden went missing.
Federal prosecutors plan to file charges against an individual later Friday, said Myra Longfield, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin. She declined to say who the individual was.
“We pursued every conceivable lead in this,†said G.B. Jones, acting special agent in charge of Milwaukee’s FBI office. He called the baby “amazingly resilient.â€
“It’s miraculous,†Jones said.
