3 dead in Maui County-chartered plane crash on island of Lanai
Federal officials will investigate the crash of a twin-engine plane shortly after takeoff from Lanai Airport in Hawaii, killing three people and leaving three injured.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what happened to the Piper PA31 craft which crashed then burned shortly after takeoff around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said in an email to the Los Angeles Times. The NTSB will be the lead investigative agency, he said.
Maui County identified the dead as the pilot of the plane and two Department of Planning employees. Two other planning employees were in critical condition and the deputy attorney for Corporation Counsel was in serious condition Thursday morning.
None of those on the plane have been named.
The group had been on Lanai for a Lanai Planning Commission meeting and chartered a return flight on Maui Air, Honolulu station KITV reported.
