510 texting, cellphone tickets issued in Newport Beach
Newport Beach police issued 510 citations to drivers for texting or using their cellphones during April, “distracted-driving awareness month.â€
Newport Beach was one of 225 agencies to participate in the campaign, according to a news release.
Police said nine people die and 1,060 people are injured daily as a result of distracted drivers.
The Newport Beach Police Department will continue its campaign to decrease distracted-driving accidents through education and enforcement, the department said.
Police urged drivers to put phones out of reach while driving and consider whether the person they are calling may be driving.
