‘Jamzilla’: Two lanes reopen on 405; heavier traffic expected today
Two of five northbound lanes on the 405 Freeway closed during “Jamzilla†reopened to commuters early Monday morning, officials said.
The two lanes -- from Mulholland Drive to Ventura Boulevard -- reopened at 5:24 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi.
Television footage showed light traffic on the section of freeway early Monday morning.
So far, “Jamzilla†has not evoked the fear and panic its name suggests as traffic through the Sepulveda Pass on Saturday and Sunday flowed with minimal delays.
Paul Gonzales, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said over the weekend that the short delays show “a lot of people have taken to heart our warnings about staying out of the area.â€
The road work has been focused on the stretch of 405 between Sunset and Ventura boulevards. It is part of a larger project that will add a new carpool lane.
Gonzales said over the weekend that the work is on schedule and officials still plan to open the entire freeway at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Despite the short delays over the weekend, transportation officials warned commuters who do not have President’s Day off to plan for heavier traffic and potentially longer delays on Monday and suggested taking an alternate route.
