Connector between 405, 22 freeways to be shut down
If you’re heading south on the 405 Freeway into Orange County this weekend and want to go east on the 22 Freeway, expect delays.
The bridge connecting the freeways will close permanently at 10 p.m. Friday. A new bridge that will replace it is scheduled to open at 5 a.m. Monday.
Highway crews will spend the weekend striping the roadway and making other final touches for the transition.
Signs will guide motorists through a detour via eastbound Westminster Boulevard and Goldenwest Street.
An average of 63,000 vehicles use the connector each day, according to the California Department of Transportation.
The Valley View Street ramps along the eastbound 22 will also be closed for the weekend, as will a section of Garden Grove Boulevard.
The work is part of the West County Connectors project by Caltrans and the Orange County Transportation Authority that will link carpool lanes on the 405, 605 and 22 freeways. The six-mile long project involves Garden Grove, Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach and Westminster.
“In the long run, the benefits from the project should outweigh the short-term pain,†he said.
And there will be more pain. The 405 is scheduled to be shut down in both directions during the weekend of Aug. 17-18 in order to demolish the old connector bridge to the 22.
