A Los Angeles police bomb squad responded to a suspicious package discovered early Friday near a Canoga Park dumpster, authorities said.

A suspicious black bag was reported about 3:40 a.m. in an industrial area in the 9000 block of Eaton Avenue, said Los Angeles police officer Christopher No.

Sources said the object found inside the bag was reported as a possible pipe bomb, but said it was not clear what the object was or whether it was any type of explosive. There have been at least three attempts to try to render the object safe, sources said.

Steve Vasquez said he heard two “muffled and very short†explosions about 7:30 a.m., and he and his coworkers waited behind police tape, unable to get into their building. Several area streets were blocked off, he said.

Police estimated streets in the area would reopen by about 11 a.m.
