Man dies after falling ill during surfing event in La Jolla
A 62-year-old man participating in a popular surfing fundraiser died after he was found unresponsive while in the surf Sunday morning.
Lt. John Sandmeyer, a San Diego city lifeguard, said paramedics transported the man to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla shortly after he was found face down in the water. Attempts to revive the man, including use of a portable defibrillator, were unsuccessful.
“I have been informed that he was deceased,†Sandmeyer said about 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
The man, who has not been identified, was attending the Luau and Legends of Surfing International for UC San Diego’s Moores Cancer Center held near the Scripps pier.
