Princess Cruises says ship passenger intentionally jumped into ocean
A cruise-ship passenger who went overboard off the coast of Hawaii did so intentionally, according to the cruise line.
Julie Benson, a spokeswoman for Princess Cruises, said witnesses told officials that the 54-year-old California woman jumped off the ship Wednesday afternoon. Security video confirmed that the woman jumped, the spokeswoman said.
“It’s very apparent from the witnesses and the video that this was her intention,†Benson said.
The woman, who boarded the ship with a companion, jumped from Deck 7, which is about 50 feet from the surface of the water, Benson said.
After the woman’s disappearance was reported, the ship reversed course to search for the woman. Coast Guard and Naval crews have joined the operation, but have not yet located her.
“The water is quite cold, and the seas are quite rough,†Benson said. “But it’s not inconceivable that she could have survived.â€
The ship is on the third day of a 15-day Hawaii cruise. It departed from San Francisco.
