Two women were killed and several other people injured early Tuesday when a Greyhound bus overturned on U.S. Highway 101 in San Jose, the California Highway Patrol said.

The northbound bus slammed into yellow protection barrels separating a carpool lane transitioning to northbound California 85 and then tipped over onto its right side, said CHP Officer Chris Miceli.

It was unclear what caused the bus to hit the barrels, Miceli said.

The crash sent debris flying across the highway, some of which struck a car in the southbound lanes, officials said. The driver of that vehicle was uninjured.

About 40 people were aboard the bus when it crashed, according to the CHP. The northbound carpool lane and transition to northbound Highway 85 were closed while authorities investigated the wreck.

The bus driver will be asked to submit a blood sample to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved, which is standard procedure in such incidents, Miceli said.
